Galeria Mederos Studio

Nestled beside the Matanza river on a quiet street lined with pastel-colored buildings lies the Galeria Mederos Studio in Matanzas, Cuba. This newly renovated studio, though modest, is home to the work, both artistically and altruistically of Jesús Alberto Mederos.

Located on Narvaes Street just blocks from the heart of Matanzas, the Galeria Mederos Studio offers a unique respite for those seeking healing and understanding. The light-filled studio is decorated with art by Mederos and sits steps away from one of the artists most prominent works in the city: a giant mural which gives homage to the history and culture of Matanzas. The studioʼs entrance also gives tribute to another prominent Cuban artist and inspiration to Mederos, Fransisco Co, who was known throughout Matanzas for his inspirational pieces depicting the city and surrounding area.

The city of Matanzas has been known for decades by its artistic influence, particularly in the fields of poetry, music, and dance. Coined both ‘the Venice of Cubaʼ, because of its many bridges, and ‘the Athens of Cubaʼ due to its long history of poets, the recent rise of painters in the area contributes to the cityʼs artistic heritage.

Mederos attributes the spirit of his work to the idyllic layout of the city and the special community support of the place he calls home. “Matanzas for me is my fountain of inspiration. Matanzas has a lot of rivers. In fact, in my artwork, there is practically always water. That is why Cuba, and above all Matanza, for me, is everything [and]...the people of this city are the most grateful for this work...I am indebted to them...the neighbors of this place have very much supported me...and the entirety of Matanzas. Matanzas believes in what is being done. Without a doubt, weʼre not going to let it look bad. Weʼre going to do a lot of things. A lot of things. Inside and outside of the country too” explains Mederos.
